“The holy Scriptures are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.”
— 2 Timothy 3:15
The church’s word for “learning and teaching the basics of the faith” is catechesis.
Through catechesis, Christians learn God’s Law and Gospel: His will for our lives, the truth about our sin, and the good news that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit save us through Jesus Christ.
Catechesis also teaches how God gives His gifts through His Word, Holy Baptism, Confession and Absolution, and Holy Communion. It teaches us to pray, calling on God in every need with confidence that He hears us for Christ’s sake.
Catechesis is a lifelong part of the Christian life. Those who wish to join our congregation in receiving Holy Communion undergo a formal period of catechesis so that they may know what Christ gives in this meal, confess their faith in Christ and His gifts, and receive Communion to their blessing.
If you are interested in joining our congregation and receiving Communion, or if you are simply curious to learn more about the basics of what Lutherans believe, you are welcome to reach out to Pastor Rutherford.
